Treadmill pace conversion, explained
Treadmills show speed, not pace. Your watch, your training plan, and every race result talk in minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer, so converting between the two is something every treadmill runner ends up doing in their head mid-interval. This calculator does it instantly: enter the number on the console in mph or km/h and it returns your pace per mile and per kilometer, plus what that pace produces over a mile, 5K, 10K, 10 miles, a half marathon, and a marathon.
The math is simple. Pace in minutes per mile is 60 divided by miles per hour: 6.0 mph is 10:00 per mile, 7.5 mph is 8:00 per mile, 10.0 mph is 6:00 per mile. For kilometers, divide 60 by km/h. One mile is 1.609 km, so 10 km/h is about 6.2 mph, or 9:39 per mile.
Common questions
What pace is 6.0 on a treadmill?
6.0 mph is a 10:00 per mile pace, or 6:13 per kilometer. A 5K takes about 31 minutes at that speed.
What treadmill speed is a 9-minute mile?
6.7 mph, or about 10.7 km/h. For an 8-minute mile set 7.5 mph, and for a 7-minute mile set 8.6 mph.
What speed is a 10K in 50 minutes?
12.0 km/h, which is roughly 7.5 mph, or 8:03 per mile.
Is treadmill pace the same as running outside?
Close, but the belt does some of the work and there's no wind. Most runners set 1% incline to make the effort match an outdoor run. Treadmill displays also round, so the true belt speed can be a tenth off.
How do I read pace on a treadmill that only shows speed?
Use this page, or remember a few anchors: 6.0 mph is 10:00, 7.5 mph is 8:00, 8.6 mph is 7:00, 10.0 mph is 6:00 per mile.
Pace is 60 ÷ speed. One mile is 1.609344 km. Treadmill readouts round, so the belt may be a hair off either way — this is as close as the console gets.
